Google Cloud Discusses Database Migrations and Other Priorities
Andi Gutmans, GM and VP of engineering for databases at Google Cloud, says the database market has reached a tipping point as businesses transition from traditional database systems to cloud-native platforms. Gutmans, who oversees development of Bigtable, Cloud SQL, Spanner, Firestore, and other Google Cloud database technologies, has a lot of influence over what happens next.
In our latest Cloud Database Report Podcast, Gutmans says Google Cloud is focused on three areas in the second half of 2021: database migrations; enterprise capabilities in areas such as security, governance, and high availability; and the developer experience.
Based on our conversation, I have identified five areas where I believe Google Cloud has, or potentially could have, an advantage in the hotly contested cloud database market:
Purpose-built modernization
Low-fuss migration
Integrated data clouds
Enterprise-class capabilities in the cloud
Transformative developer experience
Google Cloud momentum
Will Gutmans be successful in driving increased adoption of Google Cloud database technologies? Momentum is working in his favor, as evidenced by Google Cloud's 54% revenue increase in Q2.
